Theatre Grants
Program

Live theatre is indispensable due to its cultural, communal, educational, and personal benefits. In a world increasingly dominated by digital interactions, the authenticity and immediacy of live theatre remain a cherished and vital part of our cultural fabric.

Culturally, live theatre acts as a mirror to society, reflecting and challenging contemporary issues, values, and norms. Unlike other forms of entertainment, theatre’s immediacy and presence create a powerful platform for storytelling that resonates with audiences on a personal and societal level. Productions often address pressing social issues, providing commentary and fostering dialogue. This capacity to provoke thought and inspire change makes theatre an essential component of a vibrant cultural ecosystem.

In terms of community, live theatre fosters a sense of togetherness. The collective experience of watching a performance creates a shared bond among audience members. This communal aspect of theatre encourages a sense of belonging and connection, which is increasingly valuable in an era marked by digital isolation. Also, local theatres often serve as community hubs, bringing together diverse groups of people and promoting social cohesion.

Educationally, theatre goers rich opportunities for learning and personal growth. For students and young people, participation in theatre can enhance creativity, communication skills, and emotional intelligence. It teaches discipline, collaboration, and empathy as actors and crew work together towards a common goal. Exposure to theatre can also broaden horizons, introducing audiences to new ideas, cultures, and perspectives, thereby fostering open-mindedness and critical thinking.

On an individual level, live theatre provides a unique emotional and intellectual experience. The immediacy of a live performance engages the senses and emotions in ways that recorded media cannot. The presence of live actors, the spontaneous reactions, and the dynamic nature of each performance create a sense of magic and unpredictability. This ephemeral quality of theatre—where no two performances are exactly alike—adds to its allure and significance.

Furthermore, the performative nature of theatre can provide catharsis, allowing audiences to experience and process emotions in a safe and controlled environment. This can be profoundly therapeutic, providing a release from the pressures of daily life and a deeper understanding of the human condition.

The Fairbanks Family Charitable Foundation provides support to theatre companies and projects that espouse the values above. We are especially interested in helping bring theatre to underserved populations, such as smaller towns and cities without established professional theatre.

Applicants may apply for grants of up to a maximum of $10,000.

Applicants may be fully professional companies, amateur community theatres, theatre camps for kids, or any other model. However, we can only consider applications from non-prot companies that have received tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3).
